Hariyanto Arbi is a former Indonesian badminton player who ranked among the world's best men's singles players during the 1990s. Born on January 21, 1972, the athlete was widely recognized for his aggressive playing style and signature powerful smashes on the court.
A product of the PB Djarum club, Hariyanto was a mainstay for the Indonesian national team throughout the early to mid-1990s, particularly between 1990 and 1996. He retired from professional badminton in 1997 after securing numerous international titles.
Beyond his sports career, Hariyanto has also ventured into politics, previously serving as a spokesperson for the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI).
Dubbed the “100-Watt Smash” at the 1994 Thomas Cup Final
Hariyanto Arbi gained widespread public recognition following his impressive performance in the 1994 Thomas Cup final, where he faced Malaysian singles player Rashid Sidek.
The match was intensely competitive, marked by fierce smashes exchanged by both players. Hariyanto’s aggressive style, characterized by his unrelenting powerful shots, earned him the nickname “100-Watt Smash,” a moniker that remained synonymous with his career.
His victory over Rashid Sidek proved pivotal in helping Indonesia clinch the Thomas Cup title that year.
An Athletic Family Background
Born to parents Ang Tjing Bik and Goei Giok Nio, Hariyanto Arbi came from a family with a strong athletic pedigree.
He is the younger brother of two other nationally renowned and internationally decorated badminton players, Hastomo Arbi and Eddy Hartono. The three brothers are recognized as an athletic family that has shaped the history of Indonesian badminton.
Continuing Success in World Masters Events
Though he has been retired from professional competition since 1997, Hariyanto Arbi has remained active in veteran-category sporting events.
At the 2009 World Masters Games in Sydney, Australia, he won a gold medal in the 35+ men's singles category after defeating Japan’s Shinya Aoki with scores of 15–12, 15–10.
In the same tournament, he also secured gold in the 35+ men's doubles alongside Herman Laksono Lioe.
Further success followed at the 2017 World Masters Games in Auckland, New Zealand, where Hariyanto Arbi teamed up with Tri Kusharjanto to win gold in the 40+ men's doubles and claimed bronze in the 40+ mixed doubles with Elisabeth Tjandra.
Post-Retirement Career
Since leaving professional badminton, Hariyanto Arbi has remained involved in various sporting and public activities. Additionally, he explored a new role in politics by joining the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI).
His extensive career, spanning both athletics and public service, has firmly established Hariyanto Arbi as a legend of Indonesian badminton.
