Kudus – Profile of Hariyanto Arbi, a 1990s Badminton Star
Hariyanto Arbi is a former Indonesian badminton player who ranked among the world’s top men’s singles competitors in the 1990s. Born on January 21, 1972, he was widely recognized for his aggressive playstyle and powerful smashes, which became his hallmark on the court.
A product of the PB Djarum club, Hariyanto was a mainstay of the Indonesian national team throughout the early to mid-1990s, specifically between 1990 and 1996. He retired from professional badminton in 1997 after accumulating numerous international accolades.
Beyond his sports career, Hariyanto has ventured into politics, previously serving as a spokesperson for the Central Executive Board (DPP) of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI).
Hariyanto Arbi’s profile rose significantly following his impressive performance at the 1994 Thomas Cup Finals, where he faced Malaysian singles player Rashid Sidek.
The match was intense, defined by a fierce exchange of smashes between the two players. Hariyanto’s aggressive style and frequent, powerful strikes earned him the nickname “100-Watt Smash,” a moniker that remained synonymous with his career.
His victory over Rashid Sidek proved pivotal in helping Indonesia secure the Thomas Cup title that year.
Hariyanto Arbi was born to Ang Tjing Bik and Goei Giok Nio, into a family with a strong sporting pedigree.
He is the younger brother of two other nationally acclaimed badminton players who also achieved success at the international level: Hastomo Arbi and Eddy Hartono. Collectively, the three are known as an athletic family that has left a lasting mark on the history of Indonesian badminton.
Although he retired from professional competition in 1997, Hariyanto Arbi has remained active in veteran sports categories.
At the 2009 World Masters Games in Sydney, Australia, he won a gold medal in the 35+ men’s singles event after defeating Japan’s Shinya Aoki 15–12, 15–10.
In the same tournament, he also secured gold in the 35+ men’s doubles alongside Herman Laksono Lioe.
He further demonstrated his enduring skill at the 2017 World Masters Games in Auckland, New Zealand, where Hariyanto Arbi and partner Tri Kusharjanto captured gold in the 40+ men’s doubles, along with a bronze in the 40+ mixed doubles with Elisabeth Tjandra.
Following his departure from professional badminton, Hariyanto Arbi has remained engaged in various athletic and public endeavors. Furthermore, he transitioned into politics, joining the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI).
His extensive career trajectory, spanning both sports and public service, ensures that Hariyanto Arbi remains celebrated as one of Indonesia’s true badminton legends.
