Hastomo Arbi is a former Indonesian badminton athlete who emerged as a standout player from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s. Born on August 5, 1958, he became a key figure in the history of the sport, particularly in helping Indonesia reclaim the Thomas Cup in 1984.
The 162 cm tall PB Djarum trainee is also known as the older brother of 1990s Indonesian badminton icon Hariyanto Arbi.

Hastomo Arbi’s name is best remembered for the 1984 Thomas Cup held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. During the final against China, he competed in the second singles match and pulled off a stunning victory against China’s top player, Han Jian.
This win served as a vital turning point for the Indonesian team. The final was a closely contested affair, with Indonesia ultimately securing a narrow 3-2 win over China.
The title was particularly significant as Indonesia had previously lost to China in the 1982 Thomas Cup final in London, 4-5. Two years later, the "Merah Putih" squad successfully reclaimed the most prestigious trophy in men's team badminton.
Indonesia’s victory was secured by the final doubles pair, Liem Swie King/Kartono, who closed out the dramatic match.

Hastomo Arbi was an active international competitor from the late 1970s through the mid-1980s, recording numerous notable achievements across various tournaments.
At the 1979 SEA Games in Jakarta, he captured the men's singles gold medal after defeating Thailand’s Udom Luangpetcharaporn.
He also secured runner-up finishes at several prestigious international events, including the 1983 Malaysia Open, 1983 Indonesia Open, 1983 Holland Masters, and the 1984 Chinese Taipei Open.
Additionally, Hastomo earned a silver medal at the 1983 Badminton World Cup in Kuala Lumpur after falling to Han Jian in the final.
Continued Success in Senior Ranks
Despite his retirement from the elite level years ago, Hastomo Arbi remains active in senior-category badminton championships.
He won the men's singles gold medal in the 55+ age category at the 2015 World Senior Championships in Helsingborg, Sweden. He replicated this achievement at the 2025 World Senior Championships in Pattaya, Thailand, in the 65+ age category.
At the same event, Hastomo also secured a men's doubles gold medal with Simbarsono Sutanto, further expanding his collection of global honors.
A Badminton Family Legacy
Born to Ang Tjing Bik and Goei Giok Nio, Hastomo Arbi comes from a family deeply rooted in badminton.
His younger brother, Hariyanto Arbi, was one of Indonesia's premier men's singles players during the 1990s and famously captured the 1995 IBF World Championship title. Additionally, the Arbi family is linked to other badminton notables, including Eddy Hartono, who earned a silver medal in men's doubles at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
