Kudus – Indonesian badminton legend, Hastomo Arbi, is recognized as a pivotal figure in Indonesia's 1984 Thomas Cup victory after defeating Chinese men's singles player Han Jian.
Hastomo Arbi is a former Indonesian badminton athlete who rose to prominence from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s. Born on August 5, 1958, he became a key figure in national badminton history, particularly for his role in helping Indonesia reclaim the Thomas Cup in 1984.
The 162 cm tall athlete, who trained under the PB Djarum club, is also known as the older brother of 1990s Indonesian badminton legend, Hariyanto Arbi.
Hastomo Arbi is best remembered for his performance at the 1984 Thomas Cup held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In the final against China, he played in the second singles match, where he delivered a surprise victory against top-seeded Chinese player Han Jian.
This win served as a turning point for the Indonesian team. The final was a closely contested affair, with Indonesia ultimately securing a narrow 3-2 victory over China.
The title was especially meaningful as Indonesia had previously lost to China in the 1982 Thomas Cup final in London, 4-5. Two years later, the "Merah Putih" squad successfully reclaimed the trophy of the world's most prestigious men's team badminton tournament.
Indonesia's overall victory was confirmed in the final doubles match by the pair Liem Swie King and Kartono, closing out the dramatic series.

At the 1979 SEA Games in Jakarta, he won the men's singles gold medal after defeating Thailand's Udom Luangpetcharaporn.
He also finished as a runner-up in several prestigious international tournaments, including the 1983 Malaysia Open, 1983 Indonesia Open, 1983 Holland Masters, and the 1984 Chinese Taipei Open.
Additionally, Hastomo secured a silver medal at the 1983 Badminton World Cup in Kuala Lumpur after falling to Han Jian in the final.
Although long retired from elite-level competition, Hastomo Arbi remains active in senior category badminton championships.
He captured the gold medal in the 55+ men's singles at the 2015 World Senior Championships in Helsingborg, Sweden. He repeated this success at the 2025 World Senior Championships in Pattaya, Thailand, in the 65+ age category.
At the same event, Hastomo also secured a men's doubles gold medal alongside Simbarsono Sutanto, further adding to his collection of global achievements.
Born to Ang Tjing Bik and Goei Giok Nio, Hastomo Arbi comes from a family deeply rooted in badminton.
His younger brother, Hariyanto Arbi, was one of Indonesia's premier men's singles players in the 1990s and a 1995 IBF World Champion. The Arbi family is also connected to other prominent athletes, such as Eddy Hartono, who won a silver medal in men's doubles at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
