Behind the Jersey: The Unseen Journeys That Shape Athlete Character
Kudus – A soccer match is typically remembered for its goals, victories, or standing, but throughout the HYDROPLUS Soccer League All Stars 2025/2026, a different narrative has unfolded away from the stadium lights and cameras—one of camaraderie, discipline, compassion, and personal growth.
For these young athletes, the tournament is more than just a test of field performance. During their stay in Kudus, they have engaged in routines that foster character, forge new friendships, and create lasting memories that extend far beyond any match result.

Beyond every jersey lies an unseen journey. While the crowd's cheers are the most memorable part of a match, the players' lives span far more than those 90 minutes. Their days begin before dawn, waking roommates and preparing for training, competition, and end-of-day evaluations.
There are also moments of mutual support after losses, caring for injured teammates, and simply sharing stories before sleep. Such is the life experienced by the athletes participating in the HYDROPLUS Soccer League All Stars 2025/2026 in Kudus.
For Rengganis Wijanarto, captain of the JP U-18 Regional Jakarta girls' team, the journey to the All Stars represents more than just wearing a team jersey; it has fundamentally shifted her perspective on the meaning of solidarity and responsibility as an athlete.

Each morning, she and her roommate start their day with Subuh prayers, tidy their room, and prepare for a series of activities leading up to training and matches. After playing, their work continues with ice baths for recovery, congregational prayers, dinner, and collective evaluations.
"I talk most frequently with my roommate after a game. Since we both play as midfielders, we correct each other's positioning, discuss mistakes, and find solutions together," the Jakarta-born athlete said on Tuesday (7/7/2026).
For Rengganis, the camaraderie built in Kudus has been one of her most valuable experiences. Meeting athletes from diverse regions provided a space to connect, learn from one another, and share common aspirations.
Her roommate, Ilmira Octo, shares the sentiment, noting that their room became the simplest and most honest space for them to truly get to know each other.
She recalls Rengganis’s habit of waiting for company before going to sleep. Small gestures—waking each other up in the morning, preparing gear together, and listening to music before matches—have slowly become lasting memories.

The moment she remembers most vividly is when she sustained an injury during the first match. Without being asked, Rengganis immediately helped provide basic care and stayed by her side until her condition improved.
“She was so attentive. That is the one thing I will remember most about my roommate,” she said.
For Putri JP U-18 Jakarta head coach Herry Susilo, such simple stories are vital to the developmental process. He believes that the HYDROPLUS Soccer League All Stars is not just a venue to find champions, but a platform to mold individuals with strong character.

While accompanying his players in Kudus, he observed positive changes in their daily habits. They have learned to be more responsible, disciplined, and appreciative of others, making their conduct off the pitch just as important as their athletic performance.
“Attitude is number one. No matter how talented they are, without a good attitude, I don't think they will last long. We want them to become good people, both on the field and in their daily lives,” Herry emphasized.
He added that the team's objective extends beyond match results. More importantly, it focuses on equipping players to compete at higher levels, both as athletes and in their future endeavors.
He noted that while each match tests the players' technical abilities, the life they experience together throughout the tournament offers a different set of lessons.
“Every match indeed tests technical skill, but life off the field teaches the value of care, discipline, and friendship,” he explained.
As the HYDROPLUS Soccer League All Stars 2025/2026 reaches its midpoint, every match becomes increasingly pivotal for the teams. Yet, growth continues to take place outside the competition as well.

In Kudus, the players arrived wearing the same jerseys and pursuing the same goals. Beneath their uniforms lies a journey built through daily routines, togetherness, empathy, and learning—an experience they may remember long after the match results have faded. (ITN/DN/mainkekudus)
