KUDUS – A cup of coffee on the slopes of Mount Muria offers a compelling reason to slow down and unwind. Located in Japan Village, Dawe District, Kudus Regency, Watu Obonk Coffee & View provides a unique experience, pairing local coffee with panoramic views of rolling hills, sunsets, and the twinkling lights of the residential areas below at night.
Established in 2019, the café repurposed an unused family residence. Its elevated position serves as a primary attraction for visitors seeking a mountain atmosphere alongside locally sourced coffee.
Among the menu offerings, the Muria-style Japan Coffee is highly recommended by the management. The beans are harvested from their own plantation and processed in-house—from careful fruit selection to roasting—before being served.

Watu Obonk Coffee & View owner Zainul Mukminin stated that the business began with a desire to utilize a long-vacant family home. The building was transformed into a café, designed to capitalize on the surrounding natural landscape.
Zainul noted that the site was chosen for its potential as a getaway for both young people and families. The development was carried out in phases as the café began to gain traction with visitors.

"We opened in 2019. It was originally a family home that we renovated into a café. I saw the potential for great views here, so I tested it out to see if it would suit a relaxing space for youths and families, and the response has been very positive," said Zainul Mukminin.
Watu Obonk leans heavily on its evening atmosphere to enhance the visitor experience. From the shop, guests can take in the expanse of the Muria slopes. As night falls, the glow of city lights from the Kudus and Pati regions becomes visible in the distance.
"This location is best enjoyed from late afternoon into the night. Having coffee while overlooking the natural landscape is very pleasant. Especially at night, visitors can enjoy the city lights from Kudus and Pati," Zainul explained.
To reach the café, visitors must navigate typical steep mountain roads. Management advises guests to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before traveling; motorcycles are highly recommended due to the terrain.
Beyond the scenery, Watu Obonk focuses on quality coffee sourced from the Muria region. The management utilizes harvests from its own plantation, ensuring strict quality control during the bean selection process.
Zainul explained that the shop adheres to a "red-pick" standard for their raw coffee, meaning only fully ripened cherries are harvested, sorted, and processed into ground coffee.

"We source our coffee directly from our own plantation. We strictly apply a 100-percent red cherry picking standard, then screen and select only the large beans before processing them into coffee powder. Our signature offering is the Muria-style Japan Coffee, which is a favorite among both young and elderly visitors," they explained.
For the management, utilizing their own harvest is an integral part of the service provided to customers. The coffee beans are roasted in-house, then ground and brewed to order.
Watu Obonk barista Muhammad Ahfid Nurona noted that the cafe’s drink menu includes black coffee, manual brews, and various milk-based coffee preparations.

"Our menu is quite diverse, ranging from black coffee to milk-based coffee blends like palm sugar, vanilla, and caramel. However, we highly recommend the Japan Coffee. The house-roasted beans come from local farmers. The process is simple: the roasted beans are ground finely and brewed immediately. Those who prefer it sweet can add sugar. It is truly special for pure coffee enthusiasts," said Ahfid.
Japan Coffee is also a popular choice for visitors who prefer their coffee without milk, allowing them to enjoy its distinct flavor profile amidst the cool mountain atmosphere.
In addition to beverages, the cafe offers a variety of snacks, such as mendoan, tahu walik, and Watu Obonk's signature fried getuk. They also serve fern pecel, which features ferns harvested from the slopes of Mount Muria.

These options provide alternatives for guests looking to enjoy either light refreshments or a full meal while spending time at the cafe.

The natural scenery is what draws Faruq Mahrus, a visitor from Kudus, back to Watu Obonk time and again. He noted that while the journey to the cafe requires caution due to the steep terrain, the view upon arrival is well worth the effort.

"The journey here is a challenge, but the afternoon views are spectacular. You can see the sunset over the western side of Mount Muria while enjoying vistas of both the Logung and Gembong reservoirs. It is a perfect escape from the city's hustle and bustle, offering a tranquil atmosphere, fresh air, and robust coffee," said Faruq.
This experience has turned Watu Obonk into a regular hangout for Faruq and his friends, whom he visits once or twice a month, often combining the trip with a pilgrimage to the Rejenu area.
Faruq also praised Japan Coffee for its distinct flavor profile compared to others he has tried.
"It has a unique texture with fruity notes, yet the bitterness of the robusta remains dominant and satisfying. It is also very affordable for students and young people. I usually come here once or twice a month with friends before continuing on to Rejenu for a pilgrimage," he said.
For Eko, another frequent visitor to Japan Village, the mountain air is a primary reason to stop by in the afternoons. He typically orders pure Japan Coffee and occasionally purchases coffee grounds to take home.

"The atmosphere here is clearly different from home, with much fresher air. I always order the pure Japan Coffee when I visit. I even frequently buy packaged coffee grounds to bring home because the taste is so unique," said Eko.
The experiences of Faruq and Eko illustrate the dual appeal of Watu Obonk: some visitors come to unwind while taking in the Muria landscape, while others also seek to take a piece of the cafe's flavor home with them.
