Muria Trail Run Delivers an Experience That Keeps Runners Returning for More

Published: 6 August 2026Author: Saldy Nurzaman

KUDUS – Not every runner returns to a race to set a personal best or break a record. For trail runner Muhammad Ardy, from Malang, East Java, the motivation for returning to the Muria Trail Run was simpler and deeply personal: he came to Kudus to finish an unfinished story.

A year earlier, the 2025 Muria Trail Run left a lasting impression. Ardy arrived with his sights set on the podium in the 8-kilometer category, but the race took a turn when a navigation error left him off-course. The mistake cost him significant time and ultimately ended his chances of a podium finish.

The disappointment was so profound that he was moved to tears at the finish line. For a runner, failure is measured not just by a missing medal, but by the lingering question of what might have been.

That experience did not discourage Ardy from competing again; instead, it drew him back to the slopes of the Muria Mountains.

I wanted revenge,” he said.

He realized his goal at the 2026 Muria Trail Run. By morning, the starting area was filled with hundreds of runners preparing to tackle the course. Amid the pre-race routine of warming up and checking gear, Ardy carried a different mission: to redeem his performance from the previous year.

The 8-kilometer race was fiercely competitive from the start. As others pushed for the lead, Ardy maintained a steady rhythm. Running in fifth place early on, he was careful not to overexert himself, knowing from experience that the race truly begins when the terrain turns steep and demanding.

The strategy paid off. He steadily climbed the ranks to rejoin the frontrunners, ultimately crossing the finish line in second place—securing the podium spot that had eluded him a year prior.

For Ardy, however, the podium was not the end of the journey; he realized that the experience itself was more significant than the medal.

River Crossing Becomes a Memorable Challenge

As a seasoned trail runner who has competed in events across various regions, Ardy is accustomed to tackling long inclines, steep descents, narrow paths, and rocky terrain that tests one's balance. However, the Muria Trail Run presented challenges he found unique compared to other competitions.

The course through the Mount Muria area is defined by its constantly shifting character. The path leads participants through dense forest, narrow dirt tracks, slick rocks, and energy-sapping climbs. Mid-race, runners must also trek directly into a river and cross it with water levels reaching above their heels.

For some participants, this segment may be the most grueling portion of the race. For Ardy, however, it is precisely what makes the Muria Trail Run unique.

“Crossing the river, actually submerging yourself and feeling the water rise above your heels, is truly impressive. This is a trail unlike any other,” he said.

Interestingly, the river crossing proved no obstacle for him. After navigating that section, he was able to increase his pace, close the gap with the runner ahead, and maintain his position to finish in second place.

According to Ardy, experiences like this give the Muria Trail Run a distinct identity compared to many other trail races he has entered. The changing terrain requires participants to constantly adjust their strategy with every kilometer. Beyond relying solely on speed, runners must be adept at reading the landscape and pacing their energy through to the finish line.

Kudus Hospitality Completes the Adventure

Traveling alone from Malang via Surabaya, Ardy quickly experienced the warm hospitality of the local Kudus community. During the Muria Trail Run, he stayed with a friend whose family are natives of Kudus. The reception he received made him feel at home despite visiting the city for the first time for a competition.

His friend's family did more than provide a place to stay; they prepared meals, drove him to collect his race pack, and assisted with various needs throughout his time at the Muria Trail Run.

He experienced similar attention from the local trail running community in Kudus. When he struggled to find accommodation, community members promptly stepped in to help him secure a place to stay. Although he ultimately stayed at a friend's house, the gesture left a lasting impression.

“I truly didn't feel alone there,” he said.

For Ardy, the experience added value that he does not always encounter at every trail run event. In many competitions, participants arrive, race, and leave. In Kudus, he felt welcomed as a guest.

Before joining the Muria Trail Run, his knowledge of Kudus was limited to the name Sunan Muria. He was largely unfamiliar with the Muria mountain region or the thriving local trail running community.

Participating in the Muria Trail Run shifted his perspective. Beyond enjoying the challenging mountain terrain, he observed how the community and local residents embraced participants from various regions. To him, that hospitality has become an inseparable part of the Muria Trail Run experience.

“Next time, I won't hesitate if I am passing through or if there is another event in Kudus,” he said.

Ardy’s experience illustrates that the Muria Trail Run does more than guide runners to the finish line; it serves as a gateway for participants to get to know Kudus through the people they meet along the way.

Ardy’s experience is shared by many participants from outside the region. The Muria Trail Run serves not only as a competition but as an introduction to the Muria Mountain range for runners who had never set foot in Kudus before.

Valian Hafid Jayvico, chairman of the Indonesian Trail Running Association (ALTI) Kudus, said the response to the 2026 Muria Trail Run has been overwhelmingly positive. Many runners from West Java, East Java, and other provinces have praised the technical nature of the Muria course.

He noted that many participants return to the Muria Trail Run after having previously raced on the mountain's slopes. Some aim to compete in different categories, while others return to enjoy the dynamic trails that evolve based on the routes selected by organizers.

“Out-of-towners are finally learning that Kudus has a region called Muria and that it offers an extraordinary trail run route,” Valian said.

This year, the Muria Trail Run drew participants not only from cities across Indonesia but also from abroad, including a Canadian runner who secured second place in their category.

According to Valian, the presence of participants from across the region and overseas confirms that Muria is gaining recognition as a prime trail running destination in Indonesia. The diverse mountainous terrain ensures that each event offers a unique experience for participants.

From the outset, the Muria Trail Run was designed as more than just a sporting competition. Organizers adopted a sports tourism concept that integrates athletics, travel, community empowerment, and environmental conservation.

This vision is implemented through tree-planting initiatives involving race participants in the Muria region. By doing so, runners go beyond competition and contribute directly to the preservation of the area they traverse.

For the organizers, the Muria Trail Run is not merely about reaching the finish line first. More importantly, it serves as a platform to showcase the natural wonders of Muria to visitors from across Indonesia and abroad.

Reasons to Return to Muria

Last year, Muhammad Ardy left Muria disappointed after missing a podium finish. This year, he returned with a medal in hand. Yet, after the race concluded, he realized the podium was not his only achievement in Kudus.

He took home the experience of crossing the rivers characteristic of the Muria course, exploring mountains he had only heard of, and feeling the hospitality of the local community and trail running groups that made him feel welcome.

For Ardy, these experiences rounded out a journey that began with a simple drive to overcome past failure. What started as a personal mission evolved into an opportunity to discover a region he had previously known little about.

Many other participants from outside Kudus shared similar sentiments. They found not only the physical challenge of the course but also gained an appreciation for Muria’s natural beauty, local culture, and the warm reception they received throughout their visit.

This is what distinguishes the Muria Trail Run experience. While the competition offers the thrill of the race, it simultaneously provides runners the chance to see Kudus from a different perspective. (OEB/mainkekudus)
