Muria Trail Run Promotes Athleticism, Environmental Conservation, and Community Empowerment
Kudus – The morning mist blanketing Rahtawu Village, Gebog District, Kudus Regency, consistently offers a unique atmosphere for those arriving at the slopes of Mount Muria. For years, the area's dirt trails, pine forests, plantations, and surrounding mountain peaks have been a staple for local residents and a destination for outdoor enthusiasts alike.
From August 1-2, 2026, the rugged terrain will serve as the course for the Muria Trail Run 2026. However, this year’s event goes beyond a standard trail running competition. Organizers have intentionally designed the race to coincide with the 477th anniversary of Kudus Regency, blending athleticism, culture, environmental preservation, and community engagement.
This thematic approach ensures the Muria Trail Run transcends a typical sporting event. The entire program is structured to immerse participants in the character of Mount Muria, local traditions, and the daily lives of the nearby villagers.
Traditional Village Festival Theme
Now in its second year, the Muria Trail Run introduces a fresh concept centered on a traditional village feast, or hajatan.
Muria Trail Run 2026 Race Director Irwandani noted that the event site will be transformed to evoke a festive community celebration. Rahtawu Village Hall has been chosen as the hub, featuring bamboo decor, traditional ornaments, and gunungan jenang—a pyramid-shaped display of Kudus' signature culinary treat.
“We are adopting a 'village celebration' concept. The venue will be dressed in bamboo fittings, jenang displays, and cultural elements. By partnering with Jenang Mubarok, we are creating an atmosphere distinct from typical running events,” he said.
The concept serves to deepen the participant experience beyond the race itself. From registration to the start and finish lines, every detail has been curated to showcase Rahtawu Village's identity as a gracious host.
Diverse Terrain for All Skill Levels
Mount Muria is renowned for its diverse trail character. The course presents varying challenges, including dirt paths, rocky sections, long ascents, technical descents, and forested regions across the different race categories.
To accommodate varying ability levels, organizers are offering four distances: 8 kilometers, 15 kilometers, 30 kilometers, and 45 kilometers.
The 8K category is designed for beginners to trail running, while the 15K to 45K categories are tailored for runners with experience navigating mountain terrain.
Irwandani noted that every category offers a unique course profile.
“Muria is synonymous with its peaks, particularly Peak 29 and Natasangin Peak. The terrain is varied and technical. From certain points, participants have panoramic views reaching toward the coast of Jepara. The 45K category will even pass through the pine forests on the slopes of Sreni,” he explained.
The track's character is a major draw for participants seeking the experience of running through mountainous terrain with diverse contours.
Safety Remains a Priority
Mountainous terrain presents its own set of challenges, making safety the organizer's primary focus.
Organizers have established a security system, stationing personnel at points identified as having higher risk levels. Safety operations are being conducted in collaboration with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), and volunteers who will remain on standby along the race route.
With course elevations reaching approximately 3,600 meters, the preparedness of the rescue team is an integral part of the event management.
Ahead of the July 18, 2026, registration deadline, more than 450 participants have signed up toward the target of 509. This figure reflects the growing interest in the Muria Trail Run since its inception.
Conservation as Part of the Participant Experience
Beyond the mountainous trails, the Muria Trail Run features the theme Stride For Sustainability as a central component.
This theme is realized through various initiatives focused on environmental conservation efforts in the Mount Muria region.
Joel, an organizer overseeing the sustainability concept, explained that every participant would be linked to reforestation projects carried out after the event.
“We are collaborating with the Peka Muria nature conservation community. We provide the tree seedlings, but participants do not plant them directly. Instead, the team will plant the trees in the names of the finishers,” said Joel.
This approach allows participants the opportunity to return to Muria the following year to see the growth of the trees planted in their honor.
The reforestation program serves as the event's contribution to conserving the Mount Muria slopes, where the race takes place.
Waste Management Strategy Implemented Early
Efforts to protect the environment were integrated through comprehensive waste management during the event. Organizers reduced plastic usage by incorporating woven bamboo materials into the event's logistics.
A waste separation system was implemented at every water station to ensure proper disposal by category. Joel emphasized that maintaining the cleanliness of the race course is a shared responsibility.
“Our message to participants is not to leave any litter on the course. Waste management at the water stations has been prepared and integrated with the waste disposal system in Rahtawu,” he said.
These initiatives are part of a broader effort to ensure that sporting activities do not leave negative impacts on the mountain region.
Village Residents Take Part in Event Organization
Community involvement is a core element of the Muria Trail Run. Beyond providing the venue, local residents were integrated into various logistics for the event.
Irwandani explained that local vendors were hired for the start and finish lines, catering services, and staffing water stations. Participants can enjoy regional specialties such as Soto Kudus, Muria coffee, and parijoto syrup prepared by the local community.
This model ensures the event does not focus solely on the race, but also creates opportunities for residents to participate through their local businesses.
“From the venue and vendors to the refreshments at water stations, everything involves local residents. We want this event to be a part of the community,” Irwandani noted.
Hopes for Rahtawu Village
The Rahtawu Village government views the Muria Trail Run as a chance to showcase the village's potential to a broader audience.
Rahtawu Acting Village Head, Ibnu Hajar, hopes the event will draw more people to discover the tourism potential on the slopes of Muria.
He also noted that the influx of visitors from various regions boosts economic activity for local businesses.
“I express my gratitude to the organizers. I hope this increases the profile of Rahtawu village tourism, supporting village development. The presence of guests from various areas has also increased occupancy for homestays and lodging. We fully support this event,” Ibnu Hajar stated.
In addition to lodging, the arrival of participants and their supporters is expected to stimulate business for local eateries, coffee shops, and other small enterprises around the event site.
Preserving Our Forests Together
Support for the Muria Trail Run has also come from regional forestry management officials.
Teguh Jumadi Yanto, head of the Ternadi Forest Management Resort (KRPH) under the Muria Pati Ayam Forest Management Unit (BKPH) and the Pati Forest Management District (KPH), stated that sporting events in forest areas can coexist with environmental preservation efforts, provided all parties comply with existing regulations.
He reminded participants to ensure they are in good physical condition, as portions of the course traverse forest footpaths.
“Beyond introducing the tourist area in plot 61, participants will also have the opportunity to experience the trails leading to Peak 29, Argopiloso Peak, and the Pandang Hill. We hope participants prioritize their physical fitness and contribute to the protection of the forest throughout the event,” he said.
This message aligns with the organizers' vision of utilizing mountainous terrain as a space for sports while ensuring long-term sustainability.
