Rahtawu at the Foot of Mount Muria
KUDUS – Rahtawu is located approximately 20 kilometers from Kudus city. The area is surrounded by mountain ranges and features pristine river flows, including the headwaters of the Kali Gelis.
The region’s natural geography makes the journey to the village a scenic experience. Beyond the welcome gate, travelers are greeted by steep cliffs on one side of the road and rugged, precipitous terrain on the other.
Several sites are accessible along the route, notably Kedung Gong, a natural pool known for its refreshingly cold water.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Rahtawu serves as a gateway to the Puncak 29 and Natas Angin peaks. Alternatively, visitors looking for a more relaxed pace can enjoy the local riverside attractions and regional cuisine.
The Folklore Behind the Name Rahtawu
Beyond its mountain scenery, Rahtawu is steeped in local legend regarding the village's origins.
According to local tradition, the name Rahtawu is linked to the birth of Abiyoso, the son of Sakri. It is said that when Sakri's wife gave birth to a son, she suffered continuous bleeding.
Sakri attempted to menawu, or scoop out, the blood. The event inspired the name "Rah-Tawu," which later evolved into Rahtawu.
This story remains a central part of the community's cultural heritage, existing alongside the village's growing tourism industry.
In addition to its naming lore, the area features several historic sites named after Pandawa ancestors, including Eyang Sakri, Pikulun Naradha, and Abiyasa. Despite these references to wayang characters, local tradition maintains a firm prohibition against performing wayang shows within Rahtawu village.
