KUDUS – Rahtawu is located approximately 20 kilometers from Kudus City. The area is cradled by mountain ranges and features pristine, clear streams, including the headwaters of the Kali Gelis river.
These natural characteristics turn the journey into the village into a scenic experience. Once past the welcome gate, travelers are greeted by towering cliffs on one side of the road and steep terrain on the other.
Numerous attractions are scattered along the route, including Kedung Gong, a natural swimming hole known for its cold, refreshing waters.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Rahtawu serves as a gateway to the Puncak 29 and Natas Angin peaks. Alternatively, visitors seeking a more relaxed pace can enjoy the local riverside scenery and culinary offerings.
Beyond its mountain landscape, the origin of the village's name is steeped in local legend.
According to community lore, the name Rahtawu is linked to the birth of Abiyoso, the son of Sakri. It is said that when Sakri's wife gave birth to a son, she lost a significant amount of blood.
Sakri reportedly attempted to "menawu" (bale out or drain) the blood, a process from which the name Rah-Tawu—meaning "blood" and "to drain"—was derived, eventually evolving into Rahtawu.
This story remains a key part of the local heritage that thrives alongside the village's growing tourism industry.
In addition to the origin story, the village is home to several historic sites named after Pandawa ancestors, such as Eyang Sakri, Pikulun Naradha, and Abiyasa. Despite these connections to characters from the wayang (shadow puppet) tradition, local residents maintain a long-standing belief that wayang performances should not be held in Rahtawu Village.
