Muhammad Daffa Nugraha Champions Student-Athlete Excellence

Kudus – Professional paths rarely follow a straight line from one's initial aspirations, a reality reflected in the career of Muhammad Daffa Nugraha. A Kudus-born graduate of Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK) at Semarang State University, Daffa navigated a transition from the athletic arena to the field of education. His background as both an athlete and a coach has proven instrumental in building his professional career as a physical education teacher.

Amid the rapid evolution of digital technology, Daffa has also gained recognition as an educator active in creating educational content. Despite his digital pursuits, athletics remains the cornerstone that has defined his life from his school years to the present.

His interest in athletics evolved into a more serious commitment as he competed throughout his school years. After enrolling in the Physical Education program at Semarang State University, his involvement broadened through numerous tournaments and competitions during his collegiate studies.

His experience as an athlete served as a foundational stage in developing his character and discipline. Through sports, Daffa learned the value of rigorous training, physical preparation, consistency, and the pursuit of continual self-improvement.

His career path evolved beyond athletics as he transitioned into coaching. This shift expanded his experience before he eventually entered the formal education system as a teacher. Daffa noted that teaching was not his original career goal. However, over time, he discovered a passion and calling to contribute to the development of the younger generation.

From Athlete to PE Teacher

The transition from sports to education did not happen overnight. The skills and insights gained from his time as an athlete and coach formed the foundation for his entry into the school environment.

As a physical education teacher, Daffa views the profession as an opportunity to apply the expertise he acquired during his years in sports. For him, this knowledge serves a greater purpose than personal achievement; it is a resource to be shared with his students.

“I hope that the knowledge I possess is not just for my own use, but can also benefit the younger generation. Being a teacher provides an opportunity to share my experience while motivating them to remain active and continue growing,” Daffa said.

The progression from athlete to coach and finally to teacher demonstrates an evolving set of responsibilities. While an athlete’s focus is primarily on personal performance, a coach’s attention shifts to developing others. As a teacher, this role encompasses a broader scope, extending beyond sports to the overall educational process.

Daffa remarked that being part of a student’s growth is an unexpected privilege. His career trajectory reflects a continuous process of learning and adapting to different roles.

Maintaining an Athletic Identity

Despite his current career as a teacher, Daffa remains an active competitive athlete, continuing to pursue badminton and participating in various tournaments.

His training routine remains a weekly fixture. Since joining the PB Sahabat community in early 2025, he has held regular training sessions every Wednesday evening and Sunday morning.

Wednesday sessions, held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. WIB, focus on strength training and gym work, followed by technical drills. The Sunday sessions, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. WIB, focus primarily on game play.

Beyond community training sessions, Daffa maintains an independent workout regimen. His cross-training efforts include personal gym sessions, jogging, cycling, weightlifting, and combat sports such as Muay Thai and boxing.

For Daffa, the greatest challenge in training is not just the physical demand, but maintaining the required intent, commitment, and consistency. He noted that intense weight training and drills are energy-intensive, which can often lead to fatigue and a loss of motivation.

“The hardest part is actually maintaining the drive, commitment, and consistency. Strength training and technical drills require a major effort. Sometimes exhaustion hits and my motivation dips, but the goals I want to achieve push me to keep going,” Daffa said.

To stay motivated, he remains active in competitions while continuously improving the quality of his physical conditioning.

With PB Sahabat

Daffa’s involvement with PB Sahabat has become a cornerstone of his current athletic routine. He joined the community in early 2025 and remains an active member.

Daffa credits the strong sense of camaraderie within the club as a key factor in his longevity. Furthermore, the flexible training schedule allows members to balance their athletic pursuits with other professional commitments.

“The friends at PB Sahabat are supportive and great to work with. The training schedule is flexible enough to accommodate our individual activities. We also receive facility support that really aids the training process,” he said.

The community benefits from facility support provided by Bapak Ismail, which includes access to a court, a gym, and other necessary training equipment. This backing has been instrumental in helping members maintain a consistent training program.

PB Sahabat operates beyond Kudus, frequently participating in activities and competitions in other regions. Tournament participation remains a core strategy for maintaining training momentum and assessing the progress of its members.

Daffa credits his practice partners with providing positive reinforcement through healthy competition, creating an environment that encourages members to continuously develop and refine their individual skills.

Achievements and Competition Targets

Additionally, he holds a background as an athlete, having secured first place in the 69-kilogram Senior Muay Thai category at the 2023 Central Java Asta Forda Championship, and third place in the badminton team event at the 2024 Central Java PGRI Championship.

Despite his competition history, Daffa views both wins and losses as part of the evaluation process, using every match result as a learning opportunity to improve his technical and physical capabilities.

“There are lessons in both victory and defeat. They allow me to identify areas for improvement—whether in technique or physical conditioning—ahead of future competitions,” he said.

Looking ahead, Daffa is targeting badminton championships in Demak this July and Kudus this August 2026, as part of his commitment to maintaining a consistent training regimen with his community and through personal practice.

Adaptation in the Digital Age

Beyond his work as a physical education teacher, Daffa is recognized as a content creator, a role that aligns with his professional evolution amidst rapidly changing digital technologies.

His foray into content creation began with a desire to document student learning and athletic activities as a form of appreciation. Over time, he recognized social media as a viable tool for extending educational outreach to a wider audience.

His role as a teacher-creator complements his work as an educator, allowing him to share content focused on physical education, motivation, and professional pedagogical experience.

The digital presence of educators highlights the shift occurring in the modern landscape of schooling, where technological advancements foster new communication channels that extend knowledge sharing beyond classroom walls.

Nevertheless, these digital activities do not detract from Daffa's primary focus as an educator, as teaching remains his central commitment following an extensive background in the sporting world.

Support and Motivation

Throughout his professional career and athletic ventures, Daffa acknowledges that support from various parties has played a crucial role.

He credited his parents as his primary support system, noting they have been with him since he first began his athletic journey. Additionally, he acknowledged Mr. Ismail for providing training facilities and offering ongoing motivation to the athletes.

“My parents have supported me since I first started playing sports. In our community, we also motivate one another. This healthy competition keeps us improving,” said Daffa.

His fellow trainees also play a vital role in maintaining his drive to succeed. Through healthy competition and group practice, community members are encouraged to continuously refine their individual skills.

Daffa has translated these experiences into his career in education. As a physical education teacher, he hopes to inspire the younger generation to stay active and reach their full potential.

When confronted with limited resources or a lack of student enthusiasm, Daffa views such challenges as opportunities to explore new, more effective approaches tailored to his students' needs.

The career trajectory of Muhammad Daffa Nugraha demonstrates how athletic experience can serve as a foundation for a career in education. From his beginnings as a student athlete in badminton to his roles as a coach and eventually a physical education teacher, every stage has provided him with complementary insights.

Balancing his life as an active athlete, a member of the PB Sahabat community, and a teacher who utilizes digital platforms, education remains a core focus. Through his profession, Daffa continues to learn and share his knowledge with younger generations, all while maintaining the involvement in sports that has defined his life since childhood.

Addressing young athletes and students currently developing their own paths, Daffa encouraged them to persist through the process.

“Don’t give up. Practice consistency, commitment, and good morale. Listen to your coaches and seniors, and supplement your routine with extra practice to keep improving,” he advised. (sns/mkk)
