KUDUS – As the sun rises, the Bung Karno Sports Hall area, widely known to locals as GOR Wergu on Jalan GOR Wergu Wetan in Wergu Wetan Village, Kota Kudus District, Kudus Regency, Central Java, and the adjacent Balai Jagong, gradually fill with people from all walks of life. Some jog around the track, while others arrive with rackets, balls, or training gear. Inside the arena, basketball, volleyball, and martial arts athletes conduct their training sessions. In the open space of Balai Jagong, families, students, and local clubs share the grounds to exercise or simply enjoy the morning and evening atmosphere.

This sight is a daily occurrence. The Kudus Regency Government-owned sports complex has evolved beyond just a venue for tournaments or athlete training. Over time, the Wergu Sport Center has transformed into a public space that integrates athletics, social engagement, community activity, and small-to-medium enterprises within a single, interconnected area.

Wergu Sport Center Adapts to Growing Demands

The development of the Wergu Sport Center has progressed in phases to keep pace with the rising demand for sports facilities in Kudus Regency. The first feature was the Wergu Wetan Stadium, which remains a hub for athlete development and a host site for regional and national championships. Together with subsequent infrastructure additions, the stadium has formed the backbone of the regency's sports complex.

Located on Jalan GOR Wergu Wetan in Wergu Wetan Village, Kota Kudus District, Kudus Regency, Central Java, the Wergu Wetan Stadium is a multipurpose facility currently serving as the home stadium for Persiku Kudus football club. The stadium features a natural grass pitch measuring 105 x 68 meters surrounded by an athletics track, supporting both competitive football and local track and field activities.

Expansion continued in 2016 with the completion of the Bung Karno Sports Hall as part of the roughly 15-hectare Wergu Sport Center master plan. The indoor facility was built to accommodate sports such as basketball and volleyball, as well as various communal and sporting events throughout the year.

Four years later, on August 6, 2020, the Kudus Regency Government officially opened Balai Jagong, designating it as a public open space for community gatherings, art and cultural performances, and culinary activities. The addition of Balai Jagong has complemented the center's previous focus on elite athlete training and competitive matches.

Today, the Wergu Sport Center is open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and serves a diverse crowd, from athletes training for championship qualifiers to local clubs and residents pursuing fitness or leisure activities throughout the day.

Transforming Wergu Wetan Stadium to Asian Standards

As a pivotal component of the Wergu Sport Center, Wergu Wetan Stadium continues to undergo upgrades to meet the increasing requirements of modern sports hosting.

Previously, the stadium featured a grandstand with a capacity of approximately 1,500 seats, comprising 1,100 lower-tier seats and 400 upper-tier seats. This capacity successfully accommodated various football matches and other sporting events held in Kudus.

However, to meet the growing demand for more representative sports facilities, Wergu Wetan Stadium is now undergoing a comprehensive reconstruction according to Asian Football Confederation (AFC) standards. The revitalization, funded by the 2026 national budget, is designed to provide a single-seat stadium with a capacity of approximately 8,000 spectators, with completion targeted for 2027.

This development is expected to further strengthen the role of the Wergu Sport Center as a primary athletic hub under the Kudus Regency Government, while supporting the hosting of larger-scale competitions in the future.

Public Space Supporting Community Development and Activities

The expansion of the Wergu Sport Center signifies more than just an increase in sports facilities; it reflects its evolving role as a public space accessible to all. The area has become a focal point for athletic training, community exercise, and social activities that take place nearly every day.

Secretary of the Kudus Regency Education, Youth, and Sports Agency (Disdikpora), Anggun Nugroho, explained that the sport center district serves a purpose beyond simply providing a venue for sports.

According to Anggun, "Balai Jagong" was originally conceived as an open space for arts and cultural activities, as well as a community gathering spot. Over time, the area has evolved into a public hub and a night culinary center located behind the Bung Karno Stadium and Sports Hall (GOR).

The development of the area has been accompanied by the organization of various sports facilities now managed by the Kudus Regency Disdikpora. The Wergu Sport Center features the Bung Karno Sports Hall, Wergu Wetan Stadium, indoor tennis court, swimming pool, BMX track, climbing wall, skateboard area, and Balai Jagong, which includes a jogging track. This facility is also equipped with a fitness center, prayer room, toilets, changing rooms, canteen, parking lot, and waiting areas, serving the needs of athletic training, tournament hosting, and recreational sports.

The Bung Karno Sports Hall (GOR) features a main indoor court with a parquet wood surface that meets both Perbasi and international standards, complete with rubber shock-absorbing cushioning. The facility hosts various sports, including basketball, volleyball, futsal, boxing, and kickboxing. In addition to athletic events, the building is also used for various arts performances.

Meanwhile, the indoor tennis facility at the Balai Jagong complex is used not only for tennis practice but also for pencak silat and several other sports.

Accessible to the Public

These government-owned sports facilities offer numerous opportunities for the public to engage in exercise and recreational activities. Balai Jagong is open daily from 06:00 to approximately 21:00 WIB. During operating hours, the public can utilize the jogging track and open spaces for exercise or leisure.

Beyond the general public, various sports groups and communities regularly use the area for training. Running clubs, martial arts schools, and other athletic organizations utilize the Wergu Sport Center for their activities almost every day.

For organizations and members of the public seeking to utilize the sports facility for matches or other activities, the Kudus Regency Education, Youth and Sports Office (Disdikpora) has established a reservation system requiring a formal written request. Usage schedules are coordinated to ensure they do not conflict with other planned events.

Fees for facility use are subject to local government regulations. As a public asset, the rates are kept affordable to provide broader access for the community to utilize the available sports infrastructure.

Facilities Supporting Athlete Development

Beyond its popular public use, the Wergu Sport Center maintains its primary function as a training ground for athletes. One group that regularly utilizes these facilities is the Kudus Silat Academy.

Kudus Silat Academy coach Mas’ud stated that the school, established in 2024, now has over 60 members across various age groups, ranging from elementary students to university students. Training sessions are held five times per week: on Tuesday and Thursday nights, as well as Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons.

According to Mas’ud, the indoor tennis court at the Balai Jagong complex was chosen due to its central location, spacious training area, and support facilities, including mats, punching bags, and a fitness center.

For him, government-provided sports facilities serve as a vital space for nurturing the younger generation. Beyond improving martial arts skills, participants also learn discipline, build self-confidence, expand their social networks, and prepare for career paths in athletic achievement or military and police recruitment.

Training sessions occur alongside public recreation as residents use the facilities to stay active. There are no barriers between the two groups; athletes and community members share the space, pursuing different goals within the same environment.

The Wergu Sport Center serves not only as a training ground for athletes but also as a vital hub for residents integrating exercise into their daily routines.

For Aina Natalia Zahra, a young athlete with the Kudus Pencak Silat Academy, the Balai Jagong area is a familiar home. She visits five times a week to train with her peers.

Beyond her pencak silat training, Aina has utilized the area’s facilities for taekwondo, table tennis, and sepaktakraw, or simply for jogging around the complex.

She finds the busy atmosphere motivating. With equipment such as punching bags, body protectors, and training targets readily available, her workouts are more effective. However, she hopes for continued upgrades to the facilities to further improve the experience.

Ahmad Tegar Santoso, a resident of Purwosari, shares a similar experience. He visits Balai Jagong nearly every afternoon for a run, exercising three to four times a week with friends, family, or his partner.

For him, the shaded area and the vibrant community activity are the main reasons he keeps returning. He considers the current facilities adequate, though he hopes for better traffic management to ensure safer navigation for motorists, cars, and pedestrians.

The experiences of Aina and Tegar demonstrate that the Wergu Sports Center not only provides athletic facilities but also fosters an environment that encourages the community to stay active and embrace sports as part of their daily lifestyle.

Maintaining a Growing Area

Given its multi-functional daily use, the Wergu Sports Center requires cross-departmental coordination for its management. According to Anggun Nugroho, the facility is managed jointly by the Disdikpora, the Trade Office, the Transportation Agency, and the Department of Housing, Settlements, and Environment.

Such collaboration is essential to keep the area comfortable for public use, ranging from maintaining cleanliness and traffic flow to ensuring that sports, recreational, and commercial activities can coexist.

Beyond routine management, the government continues to upgrade facilities. This year, renovations were carried out on the indoor tennis court. Previously, improvements were also made to the Bung Karno Sports Hall and the swimming pool as part of broader efforts to enhance the quality of sports infrastructure in the Kudus Regency.

These efforts demonstrate that the development of the Wergu Sport Center extends beyond physical construction, incorporating ongoing maintenance and facility upgrades to meet the evolving needs of the community.
